Skin Cancer Treatment With the SRT-100™

If you have non-melanoma skin cancer or keloid scarring, it can be challenging to live with. Even when skin cancer is not medically dangerous, it is often unnerving and can be aesthetically displeasing.

Traditional skin cancer treatments like Mohs surgery leave behind large incisions that often scar. Now, superficial radiotherapy offers a non-invasive alternative treatment.

What Is Superficial Radiotherapy With SRT-100™?

Piedmont Plastic Surgery offers skin cancer treatment with SRT-100™, a medical device from Sensus Healthcare®. The SRT-100™ has been cleared by the FDA to treat non-melanoma skin cancers and keloids.

Using low-dose superficial radiotherapy (SRT), the SRT-100™ device targets cancerous cells, leaving healthy tissues untouched. It does not require incisions, cause bleeding, or leave scars.

For non-melanoma cancers, the success rate for the SRT-100™ is 98 percent, which is comparable to the efficacy of surgical interventions.

What Can SRT-100™ Treat?

The SRT-100™ device can effectively treat the following:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Non-malignant tumor cells that cause keloid scars

More than 80 percent of non-melanoma skin cancer occurs on the head, face, and neck. The SRT-100™ is ideal for treating areas such as your nose, lips, ears, forehead, and cheeks. It can also target tumors or lesions on your arms, legs, and torso.

How Does SRT-100™ Treatment Work?

The SRT-100™ device delivers precise X-rays (X-radiation) to target and disrupt cancerous tissues and other tumors in the skin. The X-rays only penetrate five millimeters to target the skin layers, which prevents the risk of deep tissue damage and complications.

These treatments are very quick and usually performed two times per week for seven weeks.

Am I a Candidate for SRT-100™ Skin Cancer Treatments?

If you have non-melanoma skin cancer or keloid scars and want to treat them without invasive surgery, Sensus SRT-100™ radiation therapy may be ideal for you. Candidates should be in good health, aside from their skin condition, and not smoke.

The SRT-100™ can kill cancer cells in all skin tones and types.

How Do I Know if I Need Surgical or Non-surgical Skin Cancer Removal?

The best way to know if you need surgical or non-surgical skin cancer treatment is to undergo an evaluation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Willard. He can evaluate your tumor or scar growths to determine which type of intervention will best address your skin condition.

Non-invasive treatments in highly visible areas are generally superior to surgical intervention if the targeted tumors are benign and not too deep.

If you need surgical skin cancer removal, Dr. Willard can also perform this.

How Long Is My Recovery After Skin Cancer Removal?

The best part about SRT-100™ treatments (aside from their amazing success rate) is the lack of downtime needed. Unlike Mohs micrographic surgery, patients will not require time off work to recover. Nor will they need skin grafts or other forms of reconstructive surgery.

Are There Side Effects Associated With SRT-100™?

The side effects of SRT are minor and usually localized.

Side effects may include:

  • Dry skin
  • Skin redness
  • Hair loss in the treatment area
  • Itchy skin (especially in the first few weeks)

How Much Does Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT) Cost?

The cost of your skin cancer removal will vary depending on the size and number of your tumors. We will provide you with a personalized quote during your consultation.

Does Health Insurance Cover SRT?

Most health insurance plans cover superficial radiotherapy treatments for skin cancer removal. Some medical insurance plans may not cover SRT treatments for keloid scar removal.

Consult with your health insurance provider to determine what your policy covers.
